Why does Invisible Children believe in investing in education?
When we first began our work in northern Uganda, local leaders repeatedly told us what has proven to be true: education is the key to lasting peace. Rather than providing temporary relief for victims of the conflict, Invisible Children chose to tackle the problem at the root - investing in the region's young, emerging leaders. We believe that true change in Central Africa is best achieved from within; it is for this reason that local mentors are investing in the lives of the country's most promising future leaders. The seeds of education bear the fruit of increased tolerance, reconciliation, and the ability to tackle the many challenges left by over two decades of war.
Where does my Legacy Scholarship donation go?
100% of your contribution goes to the Legacy Scholarship Program in Uganda, providing education and mentoring to students who otherwise could not afford it. Because this program respects the individual circumstances of every Scholarship recipient, each Scholarship requires a different level of support and financing depending on the specific cost of tuition, books, supplies, boarding, transport, mentoring and necessary logistical costs. Therefore, your Legacy Scholarship Fund contribution is combined with other donors' contributions to form a fund that covers all student expenses. Based upon the resources available in the fund, a maximum number of Scholarships will be awarded to the best and brightest students. The commitment of $35 per month is the average cost of tuition for Secondary School; $65 per month is the average cost of tuition for University.
What are the admissions requirements for the Legacy Scholarship Program?
Scholarships are given based on two major criteria: level of vulnerability and academic potential. Invisible Children uses local leadership in the most under-served areas to identify students that best fit these criteria of need and potential. After students apply for a scholarship, they undergo an application review and interview process. The admission process is highly competitive. Students who emerge as scholarship recipients do so by demonstrating a great need for financial support, as well as the academic drive to succeed and create change in their country.
Will I communicate with the student benefiting from my scholarship donation?
The Legacy Scholarship Program is set up to empower the role of a local mentor in a student's life. That person is the one supplying the communication, encouragement and accountability for each student. We believe the greatest way donors from outside Uganda can support students is by investing in their school fees and supporting the unique relationship between the student and his or her mentor. Investing in local mentorships is one way that Invisible Children is keeping its promise to help break the cycle of foreign dependency, while giving true, lasting opportunity to Uganda's future leaders.
Why provide a scholarship through Invisible Children?
Because of the transparent and focused nature of the Legacy Scholarship Program, we show concrete and tangible results. Unlike most international sponsorship organizations sponsoring small numbers of children all over the world, this project is extremely focused on one community in need of assistance after two decades of war. This focused mission allows us to explicitly measure the success of the program. The Legacy Scholarship Fund creates long-lasting change in the lives of Ugandan students and allows them to grow into the next generation of leaders. We believe in the power of education and local leadership to change the future of this region, so we employ Ugandan mentors to award scholarships and personally invest in the lives of northern Uganda's best and brightest youth. Each academic scholarship is merit-based and maintained through hard work.
